Joint German study into health effects of exposure to low levels of nanoparticles

German chemical company BASF has teamed up with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) to launch a new research project on the safety of nanomaterials.
The joint safety project will investigate potential chronic effects of nanoparticles in the lung, with a particular focus on the low levels of exposure that can arise in the workplace and the environment. The goal is to estimate health risks and establish limit values.
Studies are scheduled to run for four years at a cost of €5m. BASF will conduct the inhalation studies and BMU will take responsibility for the overall running of the project. The results will be evaluated by BAuA, the Federal Environment Office, and the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR).
